Courses, fees, requirements, accommodation, and the work-integrated learning model — everything you need to know about Sondela Academy in one place.

About the Academy

Sondela Academy uses a work-integrated learning (WIL) model where 70% of training takes place in live operating environments — working lodges, professional kitchens, and active conservation operations on the Sondela Nature Reserve. The remaining 30% is structured theory and supervised practicals. Students work under experienced workplace coaches and are assessed on real performance, not simulated exercises. The academy has applied this model since 2007.

Sondela Academy is located on the Sondela Nature Reserve and Spa, a 4,800-hectare private game reserve near Bela-Bela in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The campus is approximately one hour's drive from Pretoria Central and two hours from Johannesburg. Vehicle registration is required for gate access to the nature reserve.

The core difference is structural: Sondela students train in live operating environments on a 4,800-hectare nature reserve, not in simulated classrooms. The 70/30 work-integrated model means students accumulate real workplace experience and earn a workplace reference letter alongside their qualification. SA Chef Magazine has described the approach as addressing the fundamental employment catch-22 — needing experience to get hired — by providing both simultaneously. A three-year diploma graduate leaves with three years of verified work experience.

Courses & Programmes

Sondela Academy offers programmes across three streams: Hospitality (including Hotel, Resort and Lodge Management, Accommodation Management, Food and Beverage Management, Reception Management, and Event Co-Ordination), Conservation (including Game Ranch Management, Captive Animal Management, Field Ranger, and FGASA-accredited guiding courses), and Culinary Arts (including the 36-month Occupational Certificate: Chef with QCTO trade test). International qualifications are available through Highfield in Food Safety, Customer Service, Barista Skills, Kitchen Assistant, and Health and Safety.

Programme durations range from four-week short courses to three-year diplomas. The 12-month Introduction to Hotel, Resort and Lodge Management is the entry-level full-time programme. Management qualifications run for 24 months, and practitioner diplomas for 36 months. FGASA Nature Site Guide training runs for approximately 10 weeks, and FGASA Trails Guide for 4 weeks. Online and short-course options are available across all three streams with flexible scheduling.

The Workplace Orientation Programme (WOP) is the structured induction phase that every new Sondela Academy student completes before their full programme begins. It introduces students to the working environment, operational expectations, and professional standards of the resort. During the four-week WOP, students wear Sondela T-shirts with their own trousers before transitioning to staff uniforms. The WOP establishes the foundation for the work-integrated learning model that follows.

Requirements & Admissions

Applicants must be between 17 and 24 years old. Short courses require a minimum of Grade 10; full-time programmes require a Grade 12 (Umalusi National Senior Certificate). All instruction is in English, so English proficiency is required. Computer literacy including Microsoft Word and access to a laptop or tablet are compulsory. Conservation students must provide proof of rabies and tetanus vaccinations. Medical conditions and special needs must be declared for Academic Board review.

No. Students do not receive a salary or stipend during their programme. The workplace experience component is the work-integrated learning element of the accredited qualification — it is structured training, not employment. This applies across all streams and programme durations.

Sondela Academy has two primary full-time intakes per year: January and July. The January intake includes an induction period during the final week of January. Short courses and online programmes run flexibly throughout the year. FGASA courses have specific scheduled dates — for example, Nature Site Guide runs March to May and Trails Guide runs in November.

Open days at Sondela Academy run throughout the year. TiOLi Consulting is the authorised booking partner and manages all visit registrations. Students and parents are encouraged to attend together. To book, complete the visit interest form on this site, WhatsApp TiOLi directly, or email for a callback. A TiOLi advisor will confirm your date, send preparation details, and guide you through the entire visit.

Fees & Accommodation

Fees include all training and learning materials, two sets of uniforms (specialist kitchen uniforms for chef trainees), examination fees, tools and equipment, licensing costs, and assessment and moderation fees. Fees do not include accommodation, meals, or transport. A daily academy bus service is available at R250–R650 depending on distance. A 5% discount applies if the full tuition is paid before the programme start date.

The academy accommodates 18 female students on-site at the Sondela Nature Reserve campus. Male students arrange private accommodation nearby or in Bela-Bela. A daily academy bus service is available for transport. Separate student housing with 35 rooms is also available in Nelspruit through Sondela Student Housing. All students provide their own meals, though a staff and student canteen operates on campus.

Sondela Academy holds approval from the Institute for Leadership and Management for management training, a partnership with Enterprises at the University of Pretoria since 2016 for Entrepreneurial Studies, and international qualification delivery through Highfield (UK-based, globally recognised). FGASA-accredited guiding qualifications are delivered on campus. The Occupational Certificate: Chef includes the national trade test administered by QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations). Specific SAQA unit standard numbers and accreditation body details are available in the official prospectus and at open days.

Career Outcomes

Hospitality graduates can pursue careers as Hotel Manager, Front Office Manager, Executive Housekeeper, Restaurant Manager, or Lodge Manager. Culinary graduates follow a pathway from Kitchen Hand through Commis Chef, Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, to Executive Chef. Conservation graduates can work as Field Rangers, Nature Site Guides, Game Ranch Managers, Captive Animal Managers, or Wildlife Centre Managers. Top-performing students may also secure employment within the Sondela resort group itself.
